Compete on value, not cheapness.

The Violation
The Principle

Discounts, promotions and price cuts have replaced the value proposition as the main growth lever.

The call

Discounts buy short-term volume and long-term weakness. A brand built on value can charge for it; a brand built on deals keeps paying for every sale.

The Legends

Hopkins: "We learn that cheapness is not a strong appeal. Americans are extravagant. They want bargains but not cheapness." Ogilvy: "Any damn fool can put on a deal, but it takes genius, faith and perseverance to create a brand."

In Action (the tape)

• Always-on sales; customers who wait for the next promo.

Owned — Sitewide sale banners every month.

Earned — The brand is known for deals.

Paid — Promo-led creative only.

Analytics — Full-price conversion falling; margins eroding.

AI — AI-optimized pricing racing to the bottom.

The Corrective Play
rule-45

• Cap promo frequency.

• Lead with the value case and use offers as tactics, not identity.
