There are only two ways to move a customer to act: manipulate them or inspire them. Both work in the short term. Only one builds a business that compounds.

The Two Levers

Strip marketing down to its core and there are really only two ways to change someone’s behavior. You can manipulate them, or you can inspire them. Both get the sale. They do not produce the same business.

Manipulation

Manipulation is any tactic that drives action without building belief: countdown timers that reset, “only 2 left in stock” when the warehouse is full, drip-priced checkouts, fear-based urgency, manufactured scarcity, the constant nudge of “act now or lose out.” It works because it exploits cognitive shortcuts. The problem is that manipulation has to be repeated and escalated. Each tactic loses potency, so you need a bigger discount, a louder alarm, a scarier deadline. You’re renting behavior, never owning loyalty. And the customer often knows, on some level, that they were played — which is corrosive to repeat business.

Inspiration

Inspiration changes behavior by changing belief. The customer acts because they’ve been shown a clearer version of what they want and how you help them get there. It’s harder, slower, and far more durable. Inspired customers come back without being prodded, refer others, and forgive the occasional misstep because the relationship is built on trust rather than pressure.

The Ref’s Call

Yellow flag on manipulation. It’s not always a red — some urgency is honest, some scarcity is real — but the moment your growth depends on tactics that work against your customer’s clear-headed judgment, you’ve mortgaged the future to hit this quarter. Ask of every campaign: would this still work if the customer fully understood what I’m doing? If yes, it’s inspiration. If no, it’s manipulation, and the bill comes due.
